How to Prepare for a Spiti Valley Road Trip
Altitude, permits, road seasons and the packing decisions that matter on Himachal's most demanding circuit.
Spiti rewards preparation more than any other Himachal route. The scenery is extraordinary; the logistics are unforgiving.
Enter through Shimla and Kinnaur, and exit via Manali. Gaining altitude gradually through Kalpa and Nako reduces altitude sickness dramatically.
The Manali–Kunzum route is seasonal. The Shimla route stays open far longer, which matters when planning shoulder-season trips.
Carry cash. Card acceptance and ATM reliability drop sharply after Reckong Peo, and homestays rarely take digital payments.
Pack for a 20-degree swing in a single day: sun protection at noon, serious warmth after sunset, and a windproof outer layer at all times.
Most importantly, keep buffer days. Roads close, weather turns, and a rigid itinerary is the fastest way to ruin a Spiti trip.
